Q

What is the basis of MacConkey agar?

A

The basis of MacConkey agar is that it contains bile salts and crystal violet that inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria whilst also containing lactose which can be utilised by lactose fermenters to produce products that will acidify the media, detected by the pH indicator neutral red, turning the media a shade of red.
