SS agar is a differential and selective media which is mainly used to identify gram-negative bacteria that can utilise lactose.
What is the basis of SS agar?
The basis of SS agar is that the media includes bile salts and sodium citrate to inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria, contains lactose and neutral red to identify gram-negative lactose fermenters and contains sodium thiosulfate and ferric citrate to detect the production of hydrogen sulphide.
