Urea agar is a differential media that is mainly used for the identification of bacteria that possess the enzyme urease.
What is the basis of urea agar?
The basis of urea agar is that it contain urea and the pH indicator phenol red. When urea is split into ammonia and CO2 by urease, the ammonia alkalizes the medium which is detected by phenol red, changing the colour from light orange to pink.
