Amputations
Considered to be an avulsion involving complete loss of body part. Wound edges are typically rough/jagged
Compartment Syndrome
When blood is confined within compartment formed by fascia. swelling limited to available space, no blood flow causes tissue death
Contusions
Closed wound with soft tissues damaged underneath. Presents as painful edema and ecchymosis
Disclocations
Bone totally displaced from joint, articular surfaces no longer intact. Muscle spasms lock bone in place
Necrotizing Facaiitis
Flesh eating disease. Involves rapid tissue death from bacterial infection. Hallmark sign is severe pain out of proportion to what is observed in physical exam
Sprains
Occur when ligaments are stretched or torn, pain and swelling present, unwillingness to use joint
Strains
Occurs in injury to muscle/tendon. Result of violent contraction or excessive stretch. Pain and swelling present
Deep Vein Thrombosis
blockage of a blood vessel by a blood clot. Clot can travel to an artery, causing obstruction that leads to ischemia and infarction. Signs are swelling of extremity and erythema
Complete vs incomplete fractures
Complete- break travels all the way through bone
incomplete- bone is damaged but still intact
Open (compound) vs closed (simple) fracture
Open (compound)- skin is broken and bone is visible
Closed (simple)- Skin not broken
Oblique fracture
Fracture that occurs diagonally across bones shaft
Comminuted
Bone is splintered or crushed and is found between two main bone fragments. My jaw was a comminuted break (bag of bone shards)
Pathologic fracture
Caused by other abnormal illness (tumor displacing bone tissue)
Greenstick fracture
A partial fracture in which one side of the bone is broken and the other side bends like a green twig. Common in children
Impacted fracture
One end of the fractured bone is forcefully driven into the interior of the other. Bones “impact” each other
potts fracture
Fracture of the distal end of the fibula (lateral leg bone), with serious injury of the distal tibial articulation.
Colles fracture
Fracture of the distal end of the lateral forearm bone (radius) in which the distal fragment is displaced posteriorly
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Inherited disorder, mutation affects collagen which impacts bone and joint development. Causes thin and underdeveloped bones prone to fractures
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Inflammation of connective tissue (primarily joints) and has no known cause. Presents as swelling, pain and loss of function
Osteoarthritis
Non-inflammatory joint disease. Caused by loss of articular cartilage in synovial joint. Presents as pain, stiffness and reduced mobility
Osteomyelitis
Acute or chronic infection of the bone. Caused by infection via bloodstream, trauma or integumentary infections
