A

-Everyone was created from god, and therefore everyone was meant to be equal
-The freedom they fought for shouldn’t be limited
-It went against the natural rights doctrine that ran the colonies; contradicting this would show a tyrannical, unstable society

A

-Able to play a new role in the republic, but not the same as men
-Women were encouraged to raise patriotic sons
-Women status elevated

What were the causes and effects of the Articles of Confederations weaknesses? (3)

A

Economic- No ability to tax or control commerce, intercolonial and foreign
-> Cause: Tyrannical taxation from Britain
-> Effect: No debt paid, unfair tariffs and advantages in states (frequent disputes)

Leadership-No executive branch therefore no enforcement of laws + No judicial court system
->Cause: Fear of one person in charge from Britain
->Effect: Poor control/organization

Military-Inability to form an army +seperate state militias
->Cause: impressment
->Effect: little defense

-They reflected desires for local governments to have more power
-Distant governments were believed to be tyrannical
-There was no Federal Government, tax, or militia

What were the various compromises from the constitutional convention?

A

Great Compromise: House of representatives chosen by population, Senate had an equal number

3/5 and Slave Trade: Every 5 slaves counted as 3 people in representation; further, congress could not ban the slave trade until 1808

Bill of Rights: The promise to include a Bill of Rights in the constitution as soon as it was ratified in order to make sure Virginia and other antifed states agreed

Electoral College: From the need for representation, but fear of uneducated voters

A

It had a bicameral Legislature and gave power to the executive branch, and incorporated checks and balances/seperation of power

A

What were the four precendents set by Washingtons Presidency and how did he do this specifically?

A

Checks and Balances/prevention of tyranny: The Cabinet and the Judiciary Act, which established the Supreme Court and allowed an enforcement of the Constitution

Economic Success: Resolved any foreign issues with Countries and opening trade opportunites
Examples
->Jays treaty removed British forts from US
->Pinckneys Treaty: Allowed US trade navigation along the Mississippi/ resolved Spanish issues

Geographic protection/ strong military: Prevented uprisings and secured land
Examples
-> Battle of Fallen Timbers: NA uprising, Washingtons troops crushed it, land aquired through Greeneville Treaty
->Whiskey Rebellion: Same premise as Shays, but was actually controlled

Social Harmony: Protecting against seperation/strongly held barriers
->Washingtons Farewell Address: Warned against political parties, separatism, permanent alliances, and involvement in Euro affairs

What Precedents were set under the Adams’ administration

A

Political Parties:
->Democratic Republicans: Desired a smaller Federal Government, Agricultural interest, and a direct interpretation of the Constitution
->Federalists: Desired a larger Fed. Government, business upported by tariffs from the National Bank, and a loose interpretation of the Constitution

Going Against Pride to Maintain Peace:
XYZ affair: France was attacking US ships and demanded a large bribe for negotiations of stopping; Adams gave them this bribe, while citizens were outraged, and would rather have their money go to funding an army to support the pride of their nation

Government restriction
->Alien Act: allowed for the deportation of any political enemies (supporting foreign enemies like the French) who mostly associated with Democratic Republicans
->Sedition Act: prohibited any criticism of the Government in the press

Due to these two properties, the Kentucky and Viriginia Resolutions were enacted that allowed any state to nulify laws they viewed an unconstitutional

The resolution were before Judicial Review was established by the Supreme Court (1803)
