Minority influence
The process by which dissenters produce attitudes changes within a group, despite the risk of social rejection
Study on minority influence
Control conditions had participants indicate the slide as blue as it really was. In inconsistent conditions each group had 2 confederates who described some of the slides as green. Consistent condition described all the slides as green.
When they were consistent, 32% of participants indicated at least once they thought the slide was green too, compared to 8% in the inconsistent condition, and less than 1% in the control.
Conversion theory
People are influenced by the minority because their distinctive positivity captures their attention.
Being convinced by the majority
In contrast, being convinced by the majority requires just superficial processing, so the attitude change is weaker and has less influence on behaviour.
Result of being convinced by the minority
So people consider them more thoroughly, leading to a genuine attitude change. Leads to a more enduring attitude and potent guide of behaviour.
Minority slowness effect
Occurs when people hold a minority position and they take longer to express their opinions.
Result of minority slowness effect
Allows people to better consider the minorities arguments, allowing consideration of novel and creative possibilities.
Key parts of an influential minority
Project self confidence and be consistent in advocacy
However, don’t be perceived as rigid/inflexible. Be flexible and open minded.
Get people form the majority to cross over and adopt minority views. Leads to snowball effect
The more people that identify with the person persuading, the more likely it works.
