I think Ferrara is my favorite city to wander the streets in.
By this I mean a stroll without a plan, but one where there’s so much to discover. The streets are very different; some are narrow and humble, others, on the other hand, are wide and grand.

I spoke with Serena this morning during my lesson, about the pronunciation of the surname of the painter I discovered in the church of Santa Maria in Vado, whose name is Bononi, and she advised me that it should be Bo-noni. It’s similar to the pronunciation of Bologna.

I’ve visited Ferrara several times. I always stay at the Hotel Maxxim, which is inexpensive, but not really a budget hotel. It feels more luxurious. It offers good value, with breakfast included. It’s a bargain.

On my way back to England, I went to Marco Polo Airport to catch my flight. In the waiting room, I witnessed a distressing scene. A British woman with a small child couldn’t get through the boarding gate. She was very distressed. The problem seemed to be related to her dual citizenship, British and Italian, and the fact that the British government now requires an additional document to enter the UK for those who fall into this category. She didn’t have this additional document. She had two valid passports, but it wasn’t enough. She was trying to fill out an online form while caring for her child. I tried to help her, but there wasn’t much I could do.

Without a doubt, one of the highlights of my stay in Ferrara was discovering Bononi’s fresco in the apse of the church of Santa Maria in Vado. It was a similar experience to the one I experienced in Rome, when I entered the church of the Quattro Santi Coronati and discovered Giovanni da San Giovanni’s fresco, also in the apse. It was a mixture of wonder and amazement.

I’m having trouble finding the words to describe that part of a church, which in Italian is called “l’abside.” Specifically, the problem is that in English the same word is used to describe both the interior and exterior of an apse. For example, when I want to describe the frescoes in the apse of a church, I say that. Everyone will assume they’re on the ceiling. However, it seems that in Italian it’s necessary to say that the frescoes are on the apse basin. This is the way to describe the hemispherical vault that covers the apse.

Ho difficoltà a trovare le parole per descrivere la parte di una chiesa, che in italiano si chiama “ l’abside”. Specificamente il problema è che in inglese si usa la stessa parola per descrivere sia l’interno sia l’esterna di un abside. Per esempio quando voglio descrivere gli affreschi nell’abside di una chiesa dico proprio quello. Tutti assumeranno che questi sono sul soffitto. Tuttavia sembra che in italiano è necessario dire che gli affreschi sono sul “catino absidale”. Questo è il modo di descrivere la volta a calotta semisferica, che copre l’abside.
