Comparing the architecture of a large Italian church with that of an English one, what strikes me most is the difference in design principles. Although it is a freestanding building, it is connected to the cathedral so that it is possible to walk between the two inside.

Nell’esempio italiano, l’edificio è un’entità unica, progettata come un tutto unitario. In una chiesa inglese, tuttavia, l’edificio non è un’entità unica, ma la somma di parti indipendenti. Da nessuna parte è più evidente che in una cappella mariana.
